PRESS INFORMATION ..FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dan Christensen RE/VIEW Paintings, 1967 to the present. October 15th through November 27th, 2004
The Edward Thorp Gallery will exhibit a survey of paintings by the American artist Dan Christensen. The exhibition will consist of eight to ten large paintings, acrylic on canvas. Dan Christensens abstract paintings have a touch and ambience all their own. His paintings physically embody an elusive combination of inventive play, materiality, unfettered color and reticence that creates the impression of spontaneous arrival. It is this presence throughout his work that gives it a place in contemporary painting. It is also the absence of a signature style that makes his work pertinent to current discussions about abstract painting. Dan Christensen began exhibiting in the late sixties and was much revered as a painter by Clement Greenberg. He also received critical success in the American and European press. Yet Christensen was never a straight color-field painter, his paintings have metamorphosised continuously, often from painting to painting. The ribbon paintings of the sixties were followed by geometric color panels. In 1972all-over paintings in thicker paint, then linear drawing and amorphous shapes and ambient target paintings..Within this apparent stylistic diversity a characteristic sensuality and lyricism is enacted with cool economy, a pragmatic execution of the essential means of expression. It is Christensens casual command of color, drawing and scale that brings us, through playful precision, to a sense of presence, without dogma or over-determining context. Christensen has exhibited extensively here in the US, with Nick Wilder on the West Coast and Andre Emmerich in New York as well as Europe and Asia. He is represented in many public and private collections. He lives and works in East Hampton, NY. Gallery hours are from 11am to 6pm Tuesday through Saturday.
